Michael Jay Smith, born on November 12, 1952, in Huntington Park, Los Angeles, California, passed away on January 28, 2026, in Logan City, Utah. Michael lived a life full of dedication, both in his professional career and within his family.
Michael devoted nearly fifteen years to the United States Army, serving honorably and undertaking two tours of duty in Germany, as well as stints at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Fort Lewis, Washington, and in Synop, Turkey. He participated in Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia and was honorably discharged on August 28, 1992. His military service was a source of pride, and he often expressed a desire to have continued his commitment for the full twenty years and beyond.
Following his service, Michael transitioned into business and systems management, contributing to the private sector and civil service until his retirement on April 30, 2019. He achieved significant academic milestones along the way, graduating from Key West High School, earning his bachelor’s degree in Business and Finance from Weber State University, and later obtaining his master’s degree in Systems Management from USC.
Michael was known for his quiet and reserved demeanor, but those who knew him recognized his easygoing nature and welcoming spirit. He had a profound appreciation for the arts and could often be found listening to music, attending concerts, or immersed in a book. His love for exploration and cultural learning took him on various road trips, ranging from small Sunday drives to cross-country family vacations, all of which created cherished memories for those close to him.
Michael passionately fostered family traditions, preparing festive meals such as German food for Christmas, Chinese food for New Year’s, and chili for Halloween. His supportive nature extended generously to his family, encouraging and uplifting them in all their endeavors.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Joy Johnson Smith; his children, Ryan Smith, Tia Smith, and Thomas Smith; his daughters-in-law, Nicole Smith and Jennifer Smith; and his cherished grandchildren, Evangeline, Camille, Grayson, and Finley. He also leaves behind his sister, Sharron Hall, brother-in-law Stephen Hall, and many other in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins who will fondly remember him.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Virginia Smith Auwen and Kenneth D. Smith. His legacy will continue through the lives he touched and the many memories shared with his loved ones.
