Obituary

  • Matthew William Handy, 49 of Preston, ID passed away Tuesday July 7, 2026, at University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, surrounded by his loved ones.

  • Matthew was born April 21, 1977, in Logan, UT to William Blaine Handy and Janet Wadsworth..
  • He was the most beloved husband of Christina Handy and father of Andres, Davin, Trent, Clay, and Cristian. He was so excited when he became a Tata (grandfather) to Lucas. He was the “favorite brother” to his older sister Shannette and his baby sister Michelle. Matthew had his own landscaping business for years and later worked as a CNC machine operator. He worked a plasma table and really loved the work. Matthew prided himself on his strong work ethic, which he taught to his kids. He believed no matter what the job, give it your best effort. Matthew loved people. He would help whenever and wherever he could. He would have given the shirt off his back if a stranger needed it. He loved animals. He said he felt they were kinder and easier to talk to than people. He left behind a pack of his “rotten rotties” who adored him. An avid outdoorsman, he loved all things in nature, but most of all fishing. He did some of his best thinking while kayaking on the lakes, trying to entice the fish. Matthew loved his family and his country with deep passion. He was very patriotic and grateful to all those who served, including some family members. He loved his extended family so much, including his in-laws, Al and Maria Romero, whom he served often and would have done anything for. In the early years of their 23 years together, Matthew’s wife Christina (me), being somewhat immature, was sometimes jealous of the bond he had with his father-in-law. But her dad told her to behave, and she got over it.

Our “Matty Poo” was a good man. He was a bear of a man who was rough around the edges but loved deeply. He had a giant laugh, and when he laughed, he turned his face to the sun, and it was a full-bodied, contagious laugh full of joy. He will be deeply missed by friends and family.

Matthew was preceded in death by his father and mother, William Blaine Handy and Janet Wadsworth Wilkinson, and his grandson Forrest Grey Romero.

He is survived by his wife Christina J Handy (Romero), children Andres Romero (Mikaila), Davin Griffith, Trent Handy, Clay Handy, and Cristian Handy, grandson Lucas Sage Romero, sisters Shannette Sefita (Viliamu), Michelle Savage (Scott), uncle Daren Dean Handy, and his mother and father-in-law, Al and Maria Romero.

A service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at The Preston East Stake building, 310 N State Street, Preston, ID, 83263. Viewing from 9:30am to 10:30.
