Obituary

Daren “Shayne” DeFriez, 63, of Logan, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2026, in Logan. Shayne was born October 21, 1962, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Bruce Curtis DeFriez and Halley Margene Hunsaker.

He was born into a life that presented steep hurdles from his very first days; Shayne lived a life of profound complexity, quiet burdens, and a fiercely independent spirit.

Shayne had a great love for adventure and high-energy excitement. Whether he was cheering at the Bonneville Raceway, reading race car magazines, watching demolition derbies and monster truck rallies, or listening to Ozzy Osbourne, he found joy in the fast and the loud.

He was proud of the time he spent driving the country as a cross-country semi-truck driver, an experience that allowed him to see the vast beauty of the United States and visit most of its major cities. He even pursued a dream of aviation, attending pilot school for a time in his earlier years.

Beneath his struggles, Shayne possessed a kind and deeply sympathetic heart. Having walked a difficult, often solitary path himself, he felt a profound empathy for the plight of others and was always a soft shoulder for those in need. He always strove for independence, surviving on his own terms for many years.

He cherished the memories of his childhood, especially the times spent camping, fishing, and good times spent with family. Christmas Eve visits to his grandma’s and the birthday bus trips she took him on to Salt Lake City and their special sleepovers remained bright lights and fond memories in his heart throughout his life.

In his final years, Shayne's mind and body grew weary, and he faced escalating physical pain and daily battles. While his departure leaves us with heavy hearts, we find deep comfort in knowing that his long, difficult journey is over. He has finally been released from the confusion, the storms, and the physical limitations that challenged him here in mortality.

As per his final wishes, Shayne was cremated, and his ashes were placed together with his mother and father, reuniting them in rest. His life was celebrated by his closest family members at a private graveside service in Provo, UT, where he was remembered for his resilience and his kindness, with a firm hope in the peace he has finally found.

Special thanks go out to Red Rose Funeral Home for their compassionate service and help through our difficult time of losing him. To share a favorite memory of Shayne or to offer condolences to the family, please leave a tribute on this page.
