Carolyn Nield Spatig

June 12, 1941 — April 3, 2026

Smithfield, UT

Carolyn Nield Spatig, age 84, of Smithfield, Utah, passed away peacefully in her home on April 3, 2026, surrounded by her family. Born on June 12, 1941, in Afton, Wyoming, to Otho Floyd Nield and Delia Turner, she lived a life defined by faith, creativity, and tireless service to others. Over the years, Carolyn built a beautiful life, spending much of her time in Montpelier and Mink Creek, Idaho, before moving to Smithfield.

A woman of many talents and endless energy, Carolyn was deeply invested in the youth of her communities. She spent many years as a dedicated 4-H and Cub Scout leader, sharing her practical skills and wisdom. On the fields and the courts, she was a beloved coach for both softball and volleyball, teaching not just the mechanics of the games, but the values of teamwork, resilience, and good sportsmanship.

At home, her hands were never still. She possessed a deep creative spirit that she expressed through beautiful sewing projects and painting. She found joy and tranquility in her flower and vegetable gardens, cultivating beauty for all to enjoy, and she loved the quiet challenge of putting puzzles together.

Above all, Carolyn was a woman of profound faith. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served faithfully in numerous capacities throughout her life. Her love for the Savior was evident in the compassionate way she cared for her family, friends, and neighbors.

She married Ronald Ernest Spatig of Mink Creek in the Logan Utah Temple on September 30, 1960. They had five children and were together for 28 years.

Carolyn is survived by her children Val Dean Spatig (Renee), Randy Spatig (Holly), Jana Wheelwright (Will), and Tony Spatig, as well as her 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way), who will forever cherish her memory, stories, and the legacy of love she leaves behind.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Tina Fonnesbeck; ex-husband, Ronald; parents, Otho Floyd and Delia; and siblings, Eldo, Mary Jensen, and Elray.

Funeral services will be held on April 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Smithfield 26th Ward, 640 North 200 East, Smithfield. A viewing will take place prior to the service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Smithfield City Cemetery.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Ascend Home Health & Hospice for their tender care, and to the many devoted neighbors and friends who watched over her.
